Love over goldA different approach from Knopfler, stretching out some songs and adding keyboards. This is one of my favourites, simply because of my age when it came out and its place in my life, but not as strong an album as the first. Some very strong songs (expecially side one of the vinyl: Tunnel of love, Romeo and Juliet, Skateaway). Making movies "Victory snatched from the jaws of defeat" was how one review described this album compared to Communique. I guess that spendinging all your time on the road, couple with record company pressure for a follow up, can do that to a songwriter. Many Straits fans will argue that this is their best album.Ĭommunique A big let down when it came out and, to my mind, their least inspired album.

This album is full of great songs which still stand up today. Based on traditional blues-based rock, the album appealed to those who found a lot of rock music bloated and couldn't find much to appeal in the UK punk scene. I suspect that the answers you get about the best albums will differ depending on where the person writing is from and how big an event each album played in their lives.Īs someone who lived through the whole Dire Straits phenomenom, here's my take on their albums:ĭire Straits Their first album was a breath of fresh air in 1978. Here in New Zealand it was different: they were huge from the beginning. Phil's iconic work has also bagged him his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, whilst his charity work led him to being appointed a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order (LVO).I understand that Dire Starits didn't really break in the USA until they had released several albums. Phil has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, as well as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (once as a member of Genesis and again as a solo artist). He had a cameo appearance in Steven Spielberg's Hook, as well as starring in British rom-com Buster. Dabbling in the world of film and television, Phil also made appearances on the big screen. His work on the soundtrack also led him to receiving the Disney Legend Award in 2002. The songs were huge hits, with his track 'You'll Be in My Heart' winning him an Oscar, Academy and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. Known for his distinctive drum sound, Phil was recruited to write and perform songs for Disney's Tarzan in 1999. He then embarked on a chart-topping and historic solo career, releasing huge hit songs such as 'In The Air Tonight', 'You Can't Hurry Love' and 'Another Day in Paradise'. Sadly, John passed away in 1980, and George passed away in 2001.Īfter spending years enjoying fame within Genesis, Phil began to enjoy solo fame in the 1980s, before leaving the band in 1996. 2016 even saw the release of their very own documentary, The Beatles: Eight Days a Week, about their touring years in the 1960s. The Beatles appear in the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the UK Music Hall of Fame (to name a few) - and, of course, have their very own shiny star of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The band set numerous World Records, including Most Recorded Song, Most US Number One Albums, and Most US Number One Singles, and reigned in countless Grammy Awards. Nominated for well over 100 awards, it's no surprise that members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr were knighted for their services to music. Throughout their years, they provided us with timeless classics such as 'Here Comes the Sun', 'Hey Jude', 'Come Together' and 'Let it Be'. The Beatles made music history during their 10-year reign, making a huge cultural impact with their influences on music, fashion and even film. This includes a holiday mix of the track, which even includes sleigh-bells and unsurprisingly is quite different from the original! Listen to 'Come Some Christmas Eve (Holiday Mix)' by Tall Poppy Syndrome: This year, early Bee Gees guitarist Vince Melouney has released a re-recorded version of the Bee Gee's track 'Come Some Christmas Eve (Or Halloween)' as part of the band Tall Poppy Syndrome. Barry also commented that he had no part in the creation of the album.

This was also the final studio album Robin ever released before we sadly lost him in 2012. Released in 2006, the album is comprised of traditional Christmas songs. Other Bee Gee members also enjoyed solo careers, including Robin Gibb who did in fact release a Christmas album.

But it seems like Barry won't be bringing out any festive music as a solo artist.

There have been number of artists to bring out Christmas music more recently, like Elton John who worked with Ed Sheeran to create a Christmas song, and Gary Barlow who has released a full Christmas album this year.
